BUILDING CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS
by Elizabeth Monti, MBA, Corporate Business Development
The Pandemic has provided a new appreciation for in-person connections. In the past, you could meet your clients in person and develop a rapport much more quickly. Eye contact and body language are so important in developing trusted relationships. However, at this time, as we are getting involved with new clients and architects, we’re mostly trying to create relationships through video calls. Therefore, it is critical to focus on developing your most professional video-conference persona.
Here is a reminder of some video tips your clients/architects will notice:
• Change out of your pajamas and wear something you’d wear to an in-person client meeting. • The industry rule is “ video on ” with a preprogrammed background. • Position yourself so you’re looking directly at the camera when speaking. • Ensure your face is centered in the screen – don’t cut off your chin or the top of your head. • Put yourself on mute when others are talking/presenting. • Limit movement to avoid distractions when you are not speaking. • If you’re in an interview, don’t multi-task. For other meetings, if you must multi-task, be tactful. • Eat and drink with caution. Remember that everyone can see you and that lettuce in your teeth.
