SOKA UNIVERS ITY OF AMERICA

Aliso Viejo, CA

Type : Campus Expansion Size : 200,000 SF

The firm provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services for this university campus expansion project at Soka University which consists of three buildings.

The 4-story, 91,370 SF Marie and Pierre Curie Hall (STEM building) features 19 labs, three classrooms, 26 faculty and administrative offices, 11 conference rooms and a 100-seat auditorium alongside open collaborative spaces and student workstations throughout the facility. Core lab facilities, including an aquatics lab, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), accommodate advanced research and help recruit new faculty. The building’s instructional lab modules allow for interactive teaching and hands-on learning in this open, flexible, interactive and sustainable building to support the new life sciences concentration for undergraduate students interested in biology, biomedical research, biotechnology, public health and medicine (pre-med). The Resident Housing consists of two 4-story buildings, approximately 52,470 SF. Each hall contains 50 housing units (made up of single- and double-bedroom dormitories), meeting and social spaces, a kitchen and 24-hour study rooms and has a covered walkway connecting the two buildings.

Both proposed projects are designed to accommodate a LEED Gold Building Certification, and an exterior architectural design pallet that will respect the current design features, landscaping and cultural aspects of the campus.

POMONA COLLEGE | SMITH CAMPUS CENTER

Claremont, CA

Type: Higher Education Size: 65,000 SF

This project consisted of tenant improvements made to the Smith Campus Center at Pomona College. Several areas and challenges were undertaken.

In the basement, approximately 8,400 square feet of office space was converted to a pub-type setting. The living area was upgraded with new ceilings, lighting, and air- conditioning to provide a more inviting atmosphere.

The Coop restaurant was entirely upgraded, including a new glass-enclosed space and kitchen. Exposed ductwork was worked into the architectural scheme to create an excellent atmosphere.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERS ITY | SEAVER HALL CHEMI STRY AND PHYS ICS LAB RENOVATIONS

Los Angeles, CA

The project consisted of transforming two classrooms into laboratories. The overall project was particularly large at approximately 500 square feet, but it had challenges. One of the challenges was the fact these rooms were in the basement of a rather old building. Three new lab rooms were required, including four new chemical hoods. Fortunately, chilled and hot water was available as it passed it through the basement. These systems were tapped to serve small air handling units with outside air ducted in from the roof of the three-story building. The hood exhaust also had to be ducted through the building vertically to the roof. In cooperation with the architect this was able to be done with minimal disruption to classrooms above. Plumbing systems were provided to serve the labs and included; industrial hot and cold water, natural gas, vacuum, compressed air, nitrogen, de-ionized water, and acid waste & vent lines. An acid neutralization was required along with sampling box. Island sinks were also a part of the lab layout. The electrical design included all necessary power and new lighting. New lighting was also required for the classrooms above where minor alterations were required to accommodate the vertical HVAC systems. New communications systems and interface with the existing Fire Alarm system was also provided.

ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE | HEALTH & SCIENCE BUI LDING

Lancaster, CA

Type: Higher Education Size; 94,240 SF

This project consists of a new science laboratory and office building of 94,240 square feet located in Lancaster, California. The project includes 44,706 square feet of laboratory space with the remaining square footage consisting of offices and other non-laboratory spaces including a planetarium. The building has a very unique shape and a very large footprint. It is also in the relatively harsh high desert area of Southern California which presents HVAC design issues among others. Due to the nature of chemicals involved in the laboratories, and high desert winds, a sophisticated wind tunnel test was performed to assure proper exhaust air location and treatment.
