AlfaTech was established in Silicon Valley in 1987 as a mechanical, electrical, and technology (low voltage, security, and A/V) design engineering firm. Responding to client needs, we expanded our service offerings to include Architectural Lighting Design, Sustainability, and Smart Building. In addition, our office locations now include San Jose (Silicon Valley), San Francisco, Monrovia, Orange County and San Diego. New Construction, Design-Build 200,000 SF LEED Gold anticipated

The firm provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services for this university campus expansion project for Soka University which consists of two buildings. The 4-story, 91,370 SF Marie and Pierre Curie Hall (STEM building) features 19 labs, three classrooms, 26 faculty and administrative offices, 11 conference rooms and a 100-seat auditorium alongside open collaborative spaces and student workstations throughout the facility. Core lab facilities, including an aquatics lab, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), accommodate advanced research and help recruit new faculty. The building’s instructional lab modules allow for interactive teaching and hands -on learning in this open, flexible, interactive and sustainable building to support the new life sciences concentration for undergraduate students interested in biology, biomedical research, biotechnology, public health and medicine (pre-med). The Resident Housing are twin, 4- story, 52,470 SF buildings which anchor the university’s southwest border. Each hall contains 50 housing units (made up of single- and double – bedroom dormitories), meeting and social spaces, a kitchen and 24-hour study rooms with a covered walkway connecting the buildings.

Both proposed projects were designed to accommodate a LEED Gold Building Certification.

Ohlone Community College, Health Science & Technology Center

Master Planning, Campus Design 130,000 SF LEED Platinum

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering master planning services and full design for a new 130,000 SF academic science building located on an 81-acre former brownfield parcel once used as farmland. Building comprised of two wings, one for technology and one for health sciences, surrounding a shared green space with access to the bookstore, cafe, administration offices, and lecture hall. MEP systems include a large geothermal system, a 450kV photovoltaic system covering 38,000 SF of roof area, an enthalpy wheel heat-recovery system, and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures. The campus also features a roof-integrated PowerGuard solar electric system, which will help save more than $2.6M in operating expenses over 25 years. The campus program includes the Learning Resource Center, student support services, administration, information services, a cafeteria & food services, student dining, language labs, classrooms, lecture halls, video conferencing, computer labs, an aerobics room, a fitness center, a bookstore, Health Services, nursing labs, science and environmental labs, cadaver storage, biology life sciences, and business & technology labs. Ohlone is the first LEED Platinum campus in the United States.

Stanford University, Clark Center

The 3-story, James H. Clark Center for Biomedical Engineering and Science is strategically located at the heart of Stanford's Palo Alto campus. The Clark Center houses the Bio-X programme and fosters an unprecedented degree of collaboration among scientists from different disciplines to meet some of the most pressing scientific and medical challenges. The project consisted of three wings of laboratories that frame an open courtyard overlooked by balconies and includes a full-scale kitchen and server with 200-seat dining area, a 150-seat auditorium, and classrooms. This facility is open and flexible with laboratory layouts that can be reconfigured at will. The research space houses more than 450 scientists, technicians and faculty in biology, biochemical, biophysical, biocomputational, bioengineering, and bio neurology disciplines. The firm was responsible for the design of the HVAC, fume exhaust, building automation, and peer review of the plumbing/process piping systems.

The firm provided engineering services for a multitude of buildings on the Stanford University Campus. For the Mechanical Engineering Building, the firm provided new systems for the existing 46,000 SF two story building. For the Law School Building, the firm provided a feasibility study of campus steam/chilled water to a new Student Health Center, new Student Services Building, and Proposed Law School Student Center. The firm provided a new 50,000 SF, 3-story building to house the Graduate School of Business. The Keck Laboratory was a new 72,000 SF, three-story lab. The firm provided additions & renovations to the Medical Center Teaching Hospital. The firm also provided design services for a new Environmental Safety: 30,000 SF hazardous waste monitoring & storage facility, and systems renovation to the South Hall Cafeteria.

College of Marin, Science, Math, Nursing Building with Central Plant

LEED Gold

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design for the three-story, 77,000 SF Science/Math/Nursing Building at the Kentfield campus which included a new energy-efficient, geothermal underground / renewable-energy HVAC system. This building has state-of-the-art smart classrooms, instructional laboratories, faculty offices, rooftop observatory platform and houses a new Central Plant that accommodates electrical and mechanical equipment for the campus. The building utilizes solar panels to supply heating for the domestic hot water system and relies wholly on a new 650-ton, 340 vertical bore geothermal system which provides heating and cooling via ground- coupled water source heat pumps for the facility. This field also supplies heating and cooling to the new Fine Arts building and will supply the future 44,000SF Academic Center. The building has green roof areas which contribute to landfill diversion through the use of recycled materials; contributes to prolonging the life of the HAVC systems through decreased use due to the added roof insulation the green roof provides; Contributes to increased storm water management and improved air quality.

College of Marin, Main Building Complex

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering and technology (low voltage and audio visual) design for the 32,264 SF Main Building Complex of the Indian Valley Campus which houses faculty offices and a variety of workforce development programs, including Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, Multimedia Studies, Emergency Medical Technician, Court Reporting, and an Internet Cafe and Media Resource Center. In addition to these specialized classrooms and labs to support the programs, there will be a number of standard classrooms, office space for instructors, administrative offices, counseling offices, Records and Admissions, Library, AV/TV space, learning resources centers a small dining and food services space and normal array of support spaces.

This project has achieved LEED Gold certification.

College of Marin, Transportation Technology Complex

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering and technology design for the renovation and modernization of Transportation Technology facility on the Indian Valley campus totaling 18,000 SF, which includes automobile technology repair facilities and instructional offices. The facility includes a radiant floor heating system and a solar thermal system to provide domestic hot water.

This project has achieved LEED Silver certification.

College of Marin, Diamond PE Complex

New Construction, Additions, and Modernizations 42,388 SF LEED Gold

AlfaTech was selected to provide all up-front engineering services relating to all planned bond projects including the master planning, district-wide energy modeling, district-wide mechanical, electrical and plumbing facility assessments, and design standards for the District with projects totaling over 170,000 SF. The firm provided engineering design services and construction administration for the renovation of the Diamond PE existing complex including the men’s and women’s locker room buildings, an office/exercise room building and a gymnasium. The project included new HVAC and electrical distribution. An energy management control system (EMCS) links directly to the new central campus EMCS system on the central part of the Kentfield campus. The project also includes a photovoltaic system that will either provide electrical for distribution in the building or supplemental hot water for the swimming pool and series of sixteen new photovoltaic solar array panels in the adjacent parking lot.

This project has achieved LEED Gold certification.

For the University of San Francisco, this 61,610 SF, five-level John Lo Schiavo, S.J. Situated in the center of campus it is a focus of student life and the primarily underground building design allowed for multi-level outdoor classrooms. Center for Science and Innovation, near the middle of the campus off Masonic Avenue. This building houses 17 wet and dry teaching/computational labs, classrooms, support spaces and offices and serves more than 6,000 students required to take one science and math course during their undergraduate time at USF. The building is the first constructed to meet LEED Gold standards at USF and features floor-to-ceiling windows, smart technology that opens and closes windows automatically for temperature, a 28,000-gallon cistern tank to collect rainwater for reuse, and indigenous Northern California landscaping.

City College of San Francisco

Master Planning, New Construction 437,000 SF Targeting LEED Gold

The firm provided master planning and infrastructure design services for the City College of San Francisco’s new Ocean Avenue campus. The campus will house eight new buildings including a 113,000 SF performing arts center, advanced technology building, joint use facility, central plant (part of joint use building), classroom building, dormitory, and bookstore totaling 437,000 SF. The College’s project goals included the buildings be designed and certified to a minimum LEED Silver rating. We also provided MEP and sustainable design for the AIA Award Winning, new performing arts complex spanning 100,000 SF.

Mission College, Gillmor Center, Main Building

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering as well as technology design services for this new 118,000 SF 3-story interdisciplinary classroom facility was part of the first phase of the existing Main Building replacement at the Mission College campus. This facility includes Career Technical Education Classrooms, faculty offices, 2D art classrooms for painting and drawing, 3D art classrooms for figurines and sculpture, woodshop, metal shop, jewelry, ceramics, print shop, adaptable classrooms, meeting spaces, dry science lab and large tiered lecture space, computer labs as well as numerous student gathering and study spaces. Scope included design assist for a new Geothermal Horizontal Configuration System that required tie in of the existing installed Vertical Configuration system. This building incorporated sustainable design principles together with state-of-the art technologies to create high performance learning environments. The site and landscaping design provides a variety of exterior learning and socialization spaces, further encouraging interaction between staff and students.

The project was designed to a LEED Gold standard.

Diablo Valley College

AlfaTech provided full MEP/FP engineering design and sustainability services for this 80,000 SF educational facility. This facility houses a wide range of services and amenities for the college. This project includes an admissions office, career center, food services, School of Hotel & Restaurant Management, and the dean’s office. Some of the sustainable features include: natural ventilation, radiant floor, chilled beams, and a high efficiency central plant.

Mission College, Health & Wellness Center

AlfaTech provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design services for the new The James and Vincee Viso Sports and Wellness Complex which encompasses four main studio spaces as well as faculty offices and support spaces in its 13,692 SF footprint. Programming includes Fitness Studio, Dance Studio, Weight Training Facility and a Specialized Equipment Lab (for Adaptive PE) as well as storage and support spaces. Project required DSA approval and is LEED Silver Equivalent.

West Valley College, Fox Technology Center

The firm provided MEP and Technology engineering design services for this new, 2-story 30,000 SF technology building featuring a mechanical data room, classrooms, computer labs, distance learning labs, laboratories, lecture hall, and multi-purpose spaces. The Fox Center is the first of many wireless data buildings that provide Internet access to the campus’ exterior plazas.

De Anza Community College

The firm provided engineering design services for the modernization and engineering systems for eight existing faculty buildings, six existing quad classroom buildings, administration, multipurpose buildings, Advanced Technology Center, and restrooms upgrade. Evergreen Valley Community College

The firm was contracted to perform various on-campus additions and renovations. The first project consisted of a new two-story Learning Resource Center containing open lab, distance learning, circulation and supporting area totaling 70,000 SF; basement containing Tech Support, Cable Studio of 7,500 SF and mechanical space of 3,000 SF. Our experience at this campus also includes design of MEP/Technology for a new 2,200 SF Fine Arts Center design. The firm also performed the remodel of the 2nd Floor (approximately 20,000 SF) which houses the campuses laboratory. In addition, a due diligence evaluation was conducted to document current and past operational problems and will be used to determine potential system deficiencies based on the current building use and systems installed.

MPC is an ongoing client. The firm provided MEP and Technology engineering design services for this project. One project included providing design for new site utilities upgrades including new 21KV distribution system, new communications and power distribution to building, gas, water, storm drain, and grey water systems coordination. Also provided energy efficient gym lighting, theater lighting, exterior lighting and energy control systems for targeted areas on campus. Designed lighting with integrated occupancy sensors, photosensors, and building management system control for maximum energy savings.

The building accommodates the following services: bookstore, common reception area, associated students offices and senate chambers, student activities offices and storage, multi-cultural center, security office, food service, meeting center, student health services and information, chemistry department with labs, biology department with labs, and a bridge connection. The gross building area is approximately 63,000 SF.
