AlfaTech INSIGHTS: Quarter 2 | 2017

Culng back on meat consump@on can make huge strides in helping our environment. There’s no need to go fully vegan or vegetarian (props if you do!) but the simple act of replacing one meal a day by ea@ng more plant based foods or seafood items can help make a huge difference. Did you know more than 30% of the Earth’s surface is used to support and raise livestock? Imagine this: by culng meat consump@on, we could have more available land to enjoy. A UN study found that the livestock sector accounts for 9% of CO 2 emissions deriving from human- related ac@vi@es, but produces a much larger share of even more harmful greenhouse gases. PAULA’S GREEN TIPS Eat Less Meat (or switch to Grass-Fed) “…more than 30% of the Earth’s surface is used to support and raise livestock…” It generates 65% of human related nitrous oxide, which has 296 @mes the Global Warming Poten@al (GWP) of CO 2 . Culng back on meat is important in reducing the overall emission of GWP gases. Not to men@on studies suggest reducing your meat intake can slash your risk of chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Meat lovers, I haven’t forgooen about you. If you can make the switch and look for grass-fed beef or meat products, that can really make a difference in your health and the environment. Grass-fed meat is higher in cancer-figh@ng conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), omega-3s, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium.
