AlfaTech acquired S&K Engineering of Monrovia and LFA Lighting of Ventura. 2020

AlfaTech was established in Silicon Valley in 1987 as a mechanical, electrical, and technology (low voltage, security, and A/V) design engineering firm. Responding to client needs, we expanded our service offerings to include architectural lighting design, sustainability, Smart Building, and project management services. In addition, we expanded into five California offices, including San Jose (Silicon Valley), San Francisco, Monrovia, Orange and San Diego. AlfaTech is gaining ground through organic, merger, and acquisition growth. Establishing Vela Tech portfolio with parent company RSBG, our services reach the West Coast to the Midwest and the East Coast from partner offices in Seattle, Chicago, Reston, and Edison. We also have an international presence with offices throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design for the new Mabel Mattos Elementary School which is in the Milpitas Unified School District. The neighborhood is in Milpitas and serves 800 Prek- 5 students. The new school is 63,500 SF and being built as a center for “22 nd century learning” with classrooms referred to as learning communities that support 96 to 120 students with four to five teachers leading a grade level. Phase 2 of this project encompassed three (3) new two-story buildings, classrooms C, D and E as well as a multi purpose/kitchen in building F and 30’x40’ lunch canopy. Services included HVAC, plumbing including site gas piping, electrical limited to power, lighting, site lighting and path of travel, fire alarm, clock paging system and IT data cabling and Title 24 for the MEP systems.

AlfaTech also provided electrical engineering services for eight (8) 24’x40’ interim classroom portables

AlfaTech is providing mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design for the new 9,650 SF learning center and classroom building which will provide social and emotional spaces along with an educational resource to students. It features a learning resource center, café, counseling and break out rooms with the addition of three studio classrooms. The building will serve as a beacon in the center of campus and host a learning resource center, counseling and tech support offices, and two classrooms for digital art or science programs.

AlfaTech is also providing mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design for the modernization of Building 800, into a 3,500 SF maker’s space, digital media and science classrooms. 9,600 SF

East Side UHSD, Evergreen Valley High School, Performing Arts Center

AlfaTech provided mechanical, plumbing, electrical, & lighting engineering for a new one-story performing arts center for Evergreen Valley High School in the East Side Union High School District. The new two-story Visual Art building of roughly 24,000 SF and multi-purpose building approximately 26,000 SF has a 493-seat capacity auditorium with audio, sound, lighting, acoustics, and orchestra pit. Other amenities include space for band, choral room, dance, television studio, costume instruction and preparation, dressing rooms, ticket office, and public restrooms.

AlfaTech provided mechanical and plumbing engineering services to the Piedmont Hills High School Gym. The project consists of a new one-story auxiliary gymnasium approximately 10,000 SF that received a HVAC and plumbing engineering services evaluation.

Campbell UHSD, Performing Arts Centers San Jose, CA

AlfaTech provided mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and technology engineering services for five new performing arts centers on the campuses of Branham High School, Leigh High School, Del Mar High School, Prospect High School, and Westmont High School. Each performing arts center is a new theater complex of 9,000 SF for 200-seat capacity with lobby, seating, main stage, backstage area, green room, changing rooms, AV control room, and all necessary supporting areas. Energy efficient “green building” Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) requirements were incorporated into the base of MEP design, and AlfaTech provided MEP document requirements for CHPS certification to the LEED consultant. AlfaTech also provided MEP engineering for five other schools in the CUHSD.

AlfaTech completed MEP design for the new 140,000 SF Gilroy Unified School District’s Christopher High School and was recognized by the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). The campus includes classrooms, a cafeteria, a gym, and a performing arts building.

Phase I of this project received the Award of Excellence at the 2011 Leroy F. Greene Design and Planning Awards.

San Francisco Friends School

The firm provided services for this extensive change-use project, a retrofit of the original Levi Strauss building that transformed it from factory to an 80,000 SF K-8 school. Built in 1906, the factory required substantial updates, but the historical integrity of the building was retained. This 3-story structure includes a cafeteria, classrooms, admin spaces, a library, a gym, and a theater. Notable sustainable features include four thermal towers and a radiant heating system, both controlled by a BMS. The project achieved LEED Silver

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and sustainable design for the renovation and classroom additions of the three- story, 23,000 SF St. Joseph’s Hall, which is located at the Children’s Day School in San Francisco. The project consisted of interior and central core renovations, as well as capital repairs to the building.

AlfaTech was provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology and solar photovoltaic engineering design services for “bridging” design and related services for a new Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School. Part of the San Francisco Unified School District, Willie L Brown is located at 2055 Silver Avenue in the Bay View District of San Francisco. The new approximately 70,000 SF middle school replaces an existing school site complex located at the same address that was demolished. The new facility was constructed under a design-build construction delivery method. AlfaTech provided MEP and Technology documents up to level in order to assist design-build contractors in predesign development paring their engineered design build construction documents for DSA approval. The MEP/Technology design-build contractor will be the engineer of record.

The Sobrato Center for Humanities & the Arts is a 45,000 SF building dedicated to the school’s Art and Music programs and features a thrust-stage and 440-seat theater. The theater facilities also include an orchestra pit, fly space, full off- stage space, and a full shop for set building. A second “Black Box” theatre, which is used for smaller and more experimental productions, Sanguine Humours performances, and student-directed or student-written one-act plays, seats between 90 and 130 people.

The firm completed multiple projects for Alum Rock Union School District, including mechanical system improvements for the overall modernization program. This new three -story classroom building R required demolition of the existing music building and demolition of the end of building C for fire access and related site work.

AlfaTech provided seismic retrofit engineering services to the Watsonville High School Gym. The building K retrofit includes converting the former locker room spaces into student and staff spaces, reconfiguring the heating and cooling systems, providing power and low voltage to these new spaces, upgrading the fire alarm, and repurposing the spaces continued efficient school use.

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for Fisher Middle School. This project included a new 5,000 SF gym addition at the west edge of existing gym including a large moveable wall partition for separation of the two gyms, as well as renovation of the 10,000 SF existing gym. The expanded gymnasium will accommodate up to 1,400 spectators in new bleacher seating dividable by an operable partition at the line of the addition. Main entry doors were relocated, and new restrooms provided adjacent to the entry area. New vertical braces introduced to support the expanded structure and upgrades to HVAC, electrical power, lighting data and signal. New basketball backstops, bleachers, flooring, acoustical treatment, clerestory windows and skylights. The locker room building was demolished and a new 6,500 SF free standing modular locker room with coaches’ offices and studen t restrooms was built at the south edge of the gymnasium. At the east edge of the site, a new 5,000 dance studio and fitness center was built. A new 4,000 SF steel and wood canopy was added to connect the gymnasium entrance and the Dance Studio/Fitness Center. Site work included new landscape and walkway plaza at the west end of the gymnasium and east entrance. Blacktop play area was expanded by 20,000 SF with new exterior play courts and new campus perimeter fencing and rolling gate at the canopy covered walkway. Required DSA review and approval.

Project included the conversion of the administration building into a 3,063 SF flexible library/student lounge space with covered patio, alterations to the 2,800 SF staff lounge including addition of student and staff restrooms, conversion of a shade structure to 5,548 SF hi-tech multipurpose room, and new construction of an 8,500 SF, 2-story classroom building with six classrooms that share a collaboration space through folding glass walls.

AlfaTech provided electrical engineering design services to the Peterson Middle School's Locker Room and Gymnasium. New fire alarm systems were designed for the existing 14,800 SF Locker Building M and 21,000 SF Gymnasium Building N. Building L received two restrooms totaling 220 SF, a fire alarm system, paging/clock, telephone/data, and security system. The new fire alarm system will be connected to the campus's existing system.

AlfaTech provided electrical engineering design services to the Peterson Middle School Gym. The 21,000 SF facility received new lighting in the gym and main lobby area. A new lighting system includes fixture specifications, circuitry, associated control, and Title 24 prescriptive calculations.

The firm provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services to the Chaffey Joint Union High School District’s Chaffey High School. The new mathematics and science building E consists of three floors and a total of approximately 50,000 SF and has 18 state-of-the-art classrooms and 12 science labs. The new science labs and technology will allow the District to move toward the direction of STEM. The HVAC system consists of two large packaged rooftop units which were selected due to budget constraints and space issues. They serve a Variable Volume Hot Water Reheat system with state-of-the-art Direct Digital Controls. The building also includes several laboratory classrooms with fume hood exhaust. Electrical systems include high efficiency LED lighting and state of the art lighting controls. Daylighting and daylighting controls are also included.

CJUHSD, Chaffey High School, Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium

The firm provided engineering design services to the Chaffey Joint Union High School District’s Chaffey High School. The modernization to the Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium at Chaffey High School included a historical restoration and rehabilitation of the exterior, theatrical and acoustical upgrades, new catwalk and steel stairway, addition of two new elevators, accessibility upgrades, lobby restroom expansion, and finish improvements throughout the interior/exterior. The firm provided new central plant with chilled (200 tons) and hot water capacity to serve three new Air Handling Units. We were able to do this and preserve the building’s historical integrity. We also maintained the use of existing wall convection cabinet heaters.

At each site we conducted a survey and assessment of the HVAC equipment to ascertain the suitability of replacement with newer, more energy efficient equipment. MUSD, Joseph Gascon Elementary School

This is a new $7.5 million building for the Montebello Unified School District’s Joseph Gascon Elementary School. We provided complete Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing engineering services. The building is primarily classrooms in a two-story structure of approximately 37,000 square feet. A Head Start program is also included in the building. Twenty-eight new classrooms are being provided. The project was submitted to and approved by DSA. The HVAC system consists of small packaged rooftop heating/cooling rooftop units. The units have two compressors each which is unusual for this size (four tons) equipment. However, this does provide redundancy for each classroom and outstanding cooling efficiencies. The Head Start area consists of kitchens as well as training facilities.

High efficiency lighting is provided throughout the building along with state-of-the-art lighting controls.

PSUSD, Raymond Cree Middle School

The firm replaced the existing chillers/cooling tower and provided a new 300-ton central plant with new water-cooled chillers to the Palm Springs Unified School District’s Raymond Cree Middle School.

Services included a new two-cell cooling tower and variable speed chilled water pumping was installed. We replaced the existing multi-zone units and added VAV — multi-zone air handling units with single-zone air handling units. Install VAV boxes with terminal reheat in the existing mechanical rooms and use variable speed controls on fans. Install economizers on all units and provide hot water boilers for space heating to eliminate electric heating. Install new natural gas piping to new boilers. Reuse existing ductwork to the extent possible — clean and test ductwork.

Provided full design services for all technology infrastructure at the Oxnard Union High School District’s Rancho Campana Hig h School. Services included CCTV mass notification and Audio-Visual digital signage. Facilities included services for 800-student capacity, 100,000 SF state-of-the-art-technology classrooms. Responsibility included full coordination with the design team, development of technology plans specifications and construction management. The project is designed to a minimum LEED Silver standard to assure requirements of the collaborative for high school program (CHPS).
