LIGHTING STUDIO AlfaTech’s Lighting Studio provides aesthetically pleasing and sustainable design solutions for some of the world’s most complex and high-performing buildings. AlfaTech Lighting Studio brings a creative spirit to each project. We work closely with clients to gain an understanding of project requirements and goals. The Lighting Studio works with the design team to chart the best course based on our client’s objectives, the architect’s design, building systems, facility operational strategies, sustainability goals, and energy efficiency. Every building is unique, each having its own aesthetic and operational preferences. Lighting Studio considers preferences with great attention and detail. We are well-versed in coordinating with a range of consultants handling mechanical, electrical, plumbing, acoustical, structural, landscape, civil, security, and signage. The Lighting Studio possesses a wide range of project experience, offering a range of design and analytical services supporting a project from beginning to post-occupancy. Services include schematic daylighting design studies, facility orientation, and daylighting modeling to yield favorable LEED accreditation outcomes. AlfaTech Lighting Studio delivers solutions to address a range of goals, reducing energy consumption by harvesting daylight. Our Lighting Studio aims to delight occupants by bringing the daylight into a space by evenly distributing light while mitigating glare by considering how the eye adapts. We believe design should seamlessly transition from daylight to electric lighting, dynamically considering the sun’s rotation as it engages with a space. Our approach ensures a stimulating space that plays with light and shadow. Additionally, outdoor views have positive effects. Lighting Studio values and brings a biophilic design connecting occupants with nature. DESIGN THAT PLAYS WITH DAYLIGHT AND CONNECTS WITH NATURE

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

AlfaTech Lighting Studio engages daylighting model software to provide visual representations of how daylight will impact a facility. These images allow more informed design decision-making. Our clients expect floor plan calculation points and renderings to gain a better sense of light distribution. Lighting Studio provides floor plans, 3D views, and sectional perspectives to gain an insight into how daylight affects the space.

AlfaTech recently completed Uber’s new ground up innovative sustainable headquarters which is comprised of one 6 -story structure and one 11-story structure connected by transparent bridges in the Mission Bay district of San Francisco. AlfaTech provided design/bid/build style Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering, lighting design, and Technology (low voltage, security, audio/visual) services, throughout the entire project. AlfaTech was part of the construction administration effort and served as the engineer-of-record for mechanical and electrical installations. Entering the building from the main lobby welcomes visitors and employees with a back lit screen with changing lighting tones from sunrise to sunset mimicking daylighting. The main lobby is punctuated with ‘The Stream*’ designed by experience design agency HUSH, which represents Uber’s mission to keep the world in motion. Multiple LED tubes are programmed with a series of motion-based content that ranges from artistic to typography to documentary stories which translate beams of moving light into Uber’s activities of impact. The Event Space is designed to maintain connection to the street and city. Lighting concept follows the connection from outdoor to indoor. The back wall representing The City’s abstract grid is highlighted with a cool color temperature to replicate city lights. The curved ceiling element in the café connects people from servery to seating area and wraps around the seating area where people can gather. This illumination designed around the seating area is made up of decorative lights representing water falls at the end of a creek. AlfaTech provided engineering strategies and Smart Building System Matrix outlining all systems that should be included in the Intelligent Smart Building System.

AlfaTech (AT) provided comprehensive engineering, lighting and technology design for two 11-story high-rise buildings for Uber’s impressive new sustainable headquarters on the Chase Center campus. AT provided design services for full design, MEP, Technology, and lighting system design for the tenant improvements. With the Pandemic is behind us, what are the elements that bring us back to the office? Could it be the fun social spaces where we exchange our ideas, or could it be the nutritious meal that is provided by local vendors, or could it be those quiet spaces that give us the inspiration for innovative ideas? This project is about creating these spaces even before the pandemic happened and lighting is an integral part of achieving these goals. An inviting lobby with dynamic lit ceiling behind light grazed wood curtain provides connection between outdoors to indoors. The campus is provided with counseling locations with quiet rooms for mental health sessions. Circadian lighting sets the mood for any time of the day, while daylight views helps the connection to outdoors. Use of warm and dynamic decorative fixtures in break rooms create a calm and cozy settings to mimic living rooms at home. Meeting areas creates interesting areas where coworkers can share ideas in informal settings. Lighting Design 42,000 SF

The firm provided lighting design for this advanced technology office space.

The firm worked closely with the architect to develop a biophilic design that includes a living wall. 3500K was utilized for this component to promote plant growth and highlight the wall and its green colors. The integration of daylight in the design promoted the concepts of nature while it allowed a reduction of the LPD (light power density). The architects used the seven highest mountains of each of the seven continents, called the Seven Summits to inspire the design of the space. They combined sharp angles and cool colors to create a consistent and beautiful design. The firm used a warm white tone to add a welcoming touch to the space, as well as to enhance the angles and colors. We also used pendants to emphasize the sharp angles and promote the concept even further. The project was designed below 20% of code required wattage per California Title 24.

The project consisted of the interior and exterior renovation from a cold shell to create office and lab spaces. It also included the addition of a new two-story lobby, a new façade and an extensive exterior site remodel.

The combination of whites, grays, reds and woods gives the space a feel of simplicity and organization. So, the lighting design focused on maintaining and highlighting these qualities. It combines this with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) to highlight the reds in the space and promote the client brand. Finally, the project uses Power Over Ethernet (POE) lighting control systems to provide both energy savings data as well as none-related lighting benefits such as room scheduling and temperature control.

Seventy-five percent of the materials used in the buildout were repurposed, including 12,000 feet of reclaimed wood from shipping containers, barns and railroad ties.

When the global pioneering fashion brand Farfetch was in need of a new home in downtown Los Angeles at The BLOC, we duly stepped up to the task of creating an environment, integrating work, private shopping and event areas. The exponential growth of Farfetch had resulted in workspaces in their previous location that did not adequately represent the Farfetch brand identity. The rise of private shopping and entertaining within their global commercial spaces meant that Farfetch required a design scheme to unify their worldwide presence and bring their digital brand to life. Inspiration from the individual style that Farfetch curates and delivers to its global audience. Farfetch.com is where technology and fashion worlds collide, and the design team took references from both of these worlds to create and customize a design scheme that is as distinctive and stylish as both the Farfetch brand and its customers. The project consisted of an IDF Room, flexible seating cafe which can double as an event space with bleacher seating, conference rooms, high density workspaces, recreational areas and work rooms. This project is a true testament to teamwork with the speed and quality of the execution such a complex project. We provided MEP, Technology and Lighting services

Targeting LEED Platinum

When the Steelhead Brewery, located in the historic WWI-era double height brick-brewery building recently closed its doors, Bob Trahan, the owner, focused his efforts on building a sustainable restaurant with locally sourced materials. Project is designed for LEED platinum certification with an on-site photovoltaic array that powered most of the lighting in the building. One of the sustainability goals was to retain the structure, brick finishes, existing skylights, clerestories and windows, with energy efficient lighting. Daylight integration and the use of energy efficient lighting was critical to project design. Careful use of awnings, blackout shades at each location helped to minimize glare out from direct sunlight and provide visual comfort. New landscaped courtyard includes a community garden, rain catchment system, outdoor garden with greenhouse that will yield fresh ingredients for the kitchen. Restaurant consisted of indoor dining, bar-lounge, daytime bakery, sunrooms and outdoor dining. Overall mood of the restaurant consisted of elements of contemporary, modern, and industrial designs to create a unique style that’s perfect for inner -city living. The challenge for lighting is to enhance the vibrancy of warm woods, deep greens and various textural, brick, glass and matted finishes with one color temperature. Use of 90 CRI and color tuning technology with color temperatures from 2200K to 6500K helped create the drama. Each space is carefully commissioned at the site to the different color temperature settings that brings out the vision of the space, creating a harmonious balance between function, mood and aesthetics leading to a successful restaurant lighting design.

The client was inspired by the idea of bringing the outdoors indoors. Together with the design team, we pushed to make a statement by building around the palm tree, making it a major element of the store.

The architect wanted a very clean and simple design. We worked closely to bring very clean and even light using white track lighting that blended with the white ceiling.

One of the major challenges for lighting design for this space was the balance of Light Power Density (LPD) and a tight budget. Given that both space and budget were limited, we ran many photometric calculations with multiple layout and fixture options to provide the client with a wide range of options that could work with those constraints.
