Welcome Back to the Office

we are HIRING JOIN OUR TEAM

BIG NEWS-- after 16 months, on July 6, AlfaTech began a soft opening of all offices to allow employees to return to the workplace. Following official office guidelines and protocol, we were able to once again see, in person, the smiling faces of those we’ve worked with closely over time, and to get to know some new faces who fortunately joined the team during this time (while some opt for a more flexible/remote schedules at this time). It was a wonderful reunion all around.

*As covid mandates change around the country and our state, please be mindful of updates from HR

Who better to refer outstanding new employees than the stellar team members we already have? Did you know AlfaTech is paying referral bonuses of $3,500 to you for each great candidate you bring in who becomes a successful hire? How to Compost at Home Innovating Autonomous Vehicle Facilities with MEP Engineering -Mark Fisher, PE, LEED AP

What is Composting? "Composting is a process by which organic matter, such as leaves and food scraps, decomposes into soil.” It's a great way to recycle scraps from your yard and kitchen while also enriching the soil in your garden, improving water retention, and protecting against erosion.

What to and What Not to Compost? Many organic materials can be composted, including food scraps, lawn trimmings, and several other items including: • Fruit and vegetable peels • Houseplant trimmings • Coffee grounds and paper filters • Grass clippings Some items may attract pests and rodents, while others contain harmful compounds. Here are some items you should avoid composting: • Pet waste, such as feces or litter • Bones or scraps from meat, fish, and poultry • Dairy products • Fat, cooking oil, and grease Summary Composting is a simple, effective way to fight food waste and reduce your environmental impact. It also promotes plant growth by enriching the soil, preventing erosion, and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers in your garden. There’s a range of auto manufacturers in the autonomous vehicle space. Some manufacturers are looking to build total autonomy, while with others such as Toyota, the goal is to have cars assist to make the car safer to avoid accidents. You’ll find it mostly depends on the philosophy of the manufacturer. Interestingly, most innovation in autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies takes place in Silicon Valley.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre Hollywood, CA This project is a striking example of the creative renovation of a historical building to provide the amenities necessary to continue to attract visitors. The project consisted of a seismic structural upgrade and numerous renovations. The seating was replaced, a new state-of- the-art sound system and movie screen were installed, a new projection booth was constructed, and the lobby, exterior facade, and forecourt were renovated. New lighting was installed in the forecourt area to enhance the renowned hand and footprints embedded in concrete. This was a unique and challenging project as we were charged with designing significant systems upgrades within a strict budget while maintaining the historical nature of the building. One of the most significant challenges was the upgrade of life-safety systems within the building. Built in 1927, this landmark theatre is an opulent, awe- inspiring presence that has been a cornerstone of Hollywood’s history for over 75 years. As a reminder of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the location of preference for prestigious premieres, it remains a world-famous attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year. FEATURED SAN FRANCISCO PROJECT

Uber Mission Bay San Francisco, CA

Nikki & Danny McCarthy

AlfaTech is involved in Uber’s innovative new San Francisco headquarters which is a ground-up office building in the Mission Bay district. AlfaTech provided design/bid/build style mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering, lighting design, and technology (low voltage, security, audio/visual) services, throughout the entire project. AlfaTech assisted the architectural design team with optimizing performance by assessing various utility, façade, and wind studies. The project is designed as an innovative, ultra-high performance building that focuses on an occupant-centric workplace and includes an elaborate IT infrastructure, a façade that responds to programmatic needs, an underfloor air distribution system, a two-building atria system incorporating natural ventilation, and a central treatment system for collecting gray water and rainwater. The interactions between the occupants, the buildings, and the ambient were at the heart of the architectural and engineering systems; targeting lower environmental metrics of 1,100,000 kWh in reduced energy use and 2,100,000 gallons in reduced water use. The building's key' eco-friendly features include: • LED lighting with an occupancy driven network-based lighting control • Graywater reuse and rainwater catchment systems • Integrated building automation, controls, and management platforms • Full air-side and water-sidTwo passively conditioned, interconnected atria • Shaded facade with automated natural ventilation • Chilled sails and occupant-controlled underfloor air distribution systems • High-performance e economizing • Fuel cells redundantly powering building network operations • Urban garden • Solar domestic hot water system • PV-ready electrical system

FEATURED LIGHTING PROJECT

FEATURED AT-PD PROJECT

Raging Wire/SV1 NTT Global Data Center Santa Clara, CA

Dripp Coffee Costa Mesa, CA

Costa Mesa represents a new chapter in the owner's vision to present their finely crafted coffee in a fresh new space at South Coast Plaza. Our lighting design group worked closely with Abramson Architects to create a space filled with light that would stand out from the crowd. In the ceiling, two 18' long light-wells illuminate copper panels to create a unique skylight effect drawing in guests. This project was completed by LFA prior to joining AlfaTech, but now fortunately becomes part of our portfolio.

AT-PD is providing project and construction management services for this 4-story, 160,450 SF data center with 16Mw IT load with a 27 MVA substation on the 3.32-acre lot in Santa Clara, CA. The building is seismically isolated constructed on 52 base isolators with 26 viscous dampers, including a redundant utility infrastructure designed to remain in place while the surrounding area travels a maximum of 32” in all directions. This project was completed in April 2021.

FEATURED SAN JOSE PROJECT

Superstar Car Wash Wildomar, CA

The Carlysle San Jose, CA

AlfaTech provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design services to accommodate the complete renovation of an existing 120-foot, manual carwash connected to an existing convenience store and Jiffy Lube retail store, on a 1.43-acre site, converting the existing manual car wash into a fully-automated 4,600 SF car wash. All existing carwash equipment, plumbing, and electrical distribution systems were removed and replaced with new special plumbing and electrical distribution systems for carwash equipment in both the tunnel and the equipment rooms, including three (3) new pay stations and twenty-six (26) new vacuum stations, exterior site lighting, Title-24 calculations, and lighting controls.

The project is an entirely new 21-story high rise / mixed-use, plus mechanical penthouse. Space planning includes residential, office, warm shell retail/restaurant, amenities, parking within building structure, outdoor private/common space, circulation, and BOH. Along with the building, space planning will be the MEP infrastructure included in the core. -James A Michener

Uber Mission Bay 1 & 2 – Atria “The vibrant atria system of Uber Mission Bay 1+2 is supported with passive HVAC: mainly fan-assisted natural ventilation and radiant floors. This is truly a living apparatus, carefully zoned with regards to wind pressure and heat addition or extraction at different atria floors. As an unconditioned space (per code) with certain occupancy and equipment use, a substantial effort went into the pre-application with the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection. Stark limitations were in force for heating/cooling capacities. The eventual compliance pathway with ASHRAE 55 Adaptive Thermal Comfort set a precedent for this type of space, which then enabled translucency in exceedance of expectations.” -Erik Elmtoft, PE, PMP, LEEDAP, WELL AP
